With a 30-year history, each year it transforms a picturesque town in Toledo into the setting for one of Spain’s most spectacular historical reenactments: Consuegra Medieval returns this year from August 7 to 16 with a program that breaks the mold of typical offerings for this type of event.
Thanks to the participation of volunteers of all ages, the event reenacts the Battle of Consuegra on August 15, 1097, in which King Alfonso VI—with the help of 300 knights sent by El Cid and commanded by his own son, Diego Rodríguez—fought against the Almoravid troops of Yusuf Ibn Tasufin.
The main events of the program are concentrated over three days: August 14–16. The first of these—the historical reenactment “Fonsado Castellano: A Castle Under Siege”—immerses visitors in the moments leading up to the battle, with Consuegra Castle serving as the backdrop.
The second event, *As-Satrany: The Game of Armies*, is a spectacle that reenacts the battle through a human chess game from which Death gradually removes pieces from the board. After the game, a funeral ceremony takes place, followed by a performance of the Dance of Death.

Practical Information

The organizers recommend that visitors to the Fonsado Castellano reenactment bring water and wear comfortable shoes. Additionally, since this is a fairly large event with activities taking place at different locations, it’s advisable to allow plenty of time to attend the shows.
Access to the events held at the castle is only possible via the shuttle bus, which takes between 15 and 20 minutes to arrive; therefore, this is a factor to keep in mind when choosing the show times you wish to attend.
You can find all the information about the event, as well as purchase tickets, on the official Consuegra Medieval website.
