The basement of Plaza de España hides one of the most unique stories of Madrid’s gastronomy: the parking lot hid the old Chinese restaurant that, for decades, was considered one of the best in the capital. Between gray corridors and neon lights, this place – officially known as Zhou Yu Long, but nicknamed by many as “the Chinese from Blade Runner” – marked an era for its clandestine air, its menu of dim sum, dumplings and authentic dishes, which were not so easy to find at the time.
Since its opening in the early 2000s, the restaurant became a culinary sanctuary for locals and Asians, students, curious and night owls who came down the stairs from the bustle of the square to immerse themselves in their particular “Chinatown” castizo. The place, with just a few tables next to the open kitchen, was famous for its long lines even on weekdays, its affordable menu and that halo of authenticity and exoticism that contrasted with the big restaurants on the surface. Visiting it was a complete experience: from reading the menu on the wall and sharing a table with strangers to trying traditional recipes such as baozi, duck soup or noodles.
The closure, in 2019, due to the comprehensive reform of the square and the eviction of the subway stores, left its faithful orphans and engraved in the collective memory the image of a less aesthetic and more affordable Madrid. The restaurant became a legend: there was talk of its influence on series, of its mythical connection with cyberpunk aesthetics. In 2023, Liang Wang, the former chef, opened his own restaurant at Calle Leganitos, 26, which has picked up some of its original audience.

What the new Plaza de España parking lot will look like
Now Borja Carabante, Madrid’s delegate of Mobility, has confirmed the reopening of the premises under Plaza de España, but it is unknown what will open in this space.
The renovated parking lot, managed by EMT Madrid, will have 690 spaces, 23 electric charging points, car and electric bicycle rental , carsharing, BiciPARK and spaces for people with reduced mobility.
