There are several traditions, each one more colorful, that inaugurate Christmas in Madrid, among the most multitudinous is the Santa Claus Run. Thousands of people – up to 10,000 in the last edition – crowd the Paseo de la Castellana dressed up as Santa Claus and elves, turning the city center into a real red and white river in an event that mixes sport, fun and solidarity.
The event, which this year will be held on Sunday December 21 at 10:00 am, is much more than a 5 km race: it is a family, social and solidarity meeting. Registration includes the complete costume, from the iconic jacket and hat to the belt and beard, as well as a race bib, chip and diploma. Children under 12 participate as elves and can run accompanied by their families. For them, the race culminates with the opportunity to deliver their letters to Santa Claus and take pictures with him, who arrives in a carriage, no less.
The Santa Claus Race route
The Santa Claus Race El Corte Inglés is a solidarity race, part of the proceeds go to the Spanish Red Cross, supporting job training projects for young people at risk of social exclusion. It is the ideal opportunity to debut or repeat experience as a runner without pressure, because here the goal is to enjoy and share Christmas spirit. The route is easy and safe, going from Paseo de Recoletos to the Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz and back, and a large terrace to celebrate the end of the race outdoors.
Those who want to live the experience must register online and pick up the dorsal/attendee at El Corte Inglés de Princesa. The organizers assure that there will be gifts and surprises and the publication of the official classification the following day.
