Madrid is getting ready to receive the first big rain and cold storm of the season. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), an active Atlantic front will reach the region between Friday and Sunday, leaving widespread rainfall, strong gusts of wind and a drop in temperatures of up to 10 degrees compared to the previous week. It will be the first serious warning of the winter after an abnormally mild October.
The front, associated with the Benjamin squall, will cross the Peninsula from west to east, causing intermittent showers that may accumulate up to 10 liters per square meter in the capital and up to 50-70 mm in the north of the Community and mountain areas, such as Navacerrada and Rascafría. The AEMET maintains activated the yellow alert for wind, with gusts that could reach 60 km / h in Madrid city and up to 80 km / h in high areas. As a precaution, the City Council will close again the accesses and children’s areas of parks such as El Retiro and Casa de Campo, a usual measure in case of adverse weather phenomena.
Rains this weekend in Madrid
On Saturday the most notable worsening is expected, with overcast skies and persistent rain throughout the day, while Sunday will leave a more autumnal panorama, with sporadic clearings and humid atmosphere. Highs will drop to 19 °C and lows will fall to 7-8 °C, especially in the southern metropolitan area, in municipalities such as Getafe or Alcorcón, and in the north, where the temperature drop will be even more pronounced, with values of 4-5 °C in the mountains.
Far from being a one-off episode, meteorologists predict that this influx of cold air opens what some already call the “carousel of squalls”, a succession of wet fronts from the Atlantic that will affect the center of the peninsula throughout next week. This means that the “rainy door has already opened”, in the words of the experts, anticipating an end of October more typical of Madrid’s autumn, with a succession of gray days and the possibility of isolated storms.
Despite the bad weather, experts qualify that this is good news for the Community, which drags a significant water deficit since summer.
Thus, Madrid faces a weekend of umbrellas, coats and boots, with the definitive return of autumn and the arrival of the first sensations of winter cold.
