Antiques and decor enthusiasts have a new date to mark on their calendars this spring. On May 15 and 16, the Las Rozas fairgrounds will host the 7th Gran Desembalaje de Madrid – Las Rozas, a massive flea market in the style of southern France with over 150 exhibitors and 14,500 square meters dedicated to antique furniture, vintage pieces, collectibles, and decorative items with a rich history, in the true spirit of the great marchés aux puces.
Behind that peculiar name, “desembalaje,” lies a very specific format highly coveted by interior designers, antique dealers, and collectors: for two days, professionals from Spain, France, and Portugal arrive at the venue with their best finds of the season, literally loaded into vans and trucks. The charm lies precisely there, in the fact that sales take place “right out of the van,” where many exhibitors simply open their doors, lay out the pieces around the vehicle, and turn each stand into a mix of a magical storage room, an interior design studio, and an impromptu flea market, where negotiation, conversation, and a nose for finding treasures are all part of the game.
A “desembalaje” of decor and antiques
Admission is free, the venue is outdoors with parking on-site, and there’s also a direct bus route from Moncloa to the event entrance, making it a very accessible option even for those who don’t want to drive. Strolling leisurely through the aisles, comparing prices, haggling at your own pace, asking about the history of a dresser or a painting, and moving on is part of the charm: every turn might reveal a new surprise.
Beyond mere buying and selling, the Gran Desembalaje aims to be a small festival of “object culture”: there are workshops, talks, and live demonstrations on restoration, interior design, upholstery techniques, and tips for starting a collection, designed for both the curious and those already in the trade. In this seventh edition, the event takes another leap forward by incorporating a food truck area, photo booth spaces, activities for the public, and live music, turning the flea market into a full day of leisure where you can alternate between searching for the perfect piece of furniture and taking a break to eat in the sun, chat with friends, or take photos among pieces from bygone eras.
