Traveling back to the Middle Ages and the universe of The Lord of the Rings is possible in the Sierra Norte de Madrid. Thanks to the “El Camino delAnillo” route, you can explore up to eight different stages inspired by Tolkien’s novel, which maintain the adventurous spirit of the mountains.
Over 120 kilometers, the itinerary highlights the similarities between the geography of Madrid and the authentic Middle Earth. You can enjoy the nature of protected areas such as the Sierra del Rincón Biosphere Reserve and the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park , as well as the gastronomy of local products.
Eight stages, eight villages

The route is divided into eight stages, the first of which is between El Berrueco and Buitrago del Lozoya, which resemble the locations of Hobbiton and Bree. At the beginning, the medieval bridge of Sieteiglesias stands out , and later, the walled city and medieval weapons of Buitrago.
On the second day, the route continues to Madarcos, one of the smallest villages in Madrid but also one of the most charming, included by UNESCO in the Sierra del Rincón Biosphere Reserve.
From the elven forest to the mountain

The third day takes you through the elven forest, which is none other than Montejo de la Sierra, full of oak and beech trees. On the fourth day , you reach La Hiruela, a town that has hardly changed since it was built and is reminiscent of Rivendell.
From the forest, you move on to the mountains, crossing the valley of Puebla de la Sierra, with its folds and rocky ridges reminiscent of Moria. The next day , you set off from El Atazar (Lorien), along a path full of cliffs, ruins, and aqueducts until you reach Patones, which symbolizes the Lands of Rohan.
From there, the final stretch ends in Torrelaguna, a place full of grandeur, much like Minas Tirith. The stages are between 10 and 20 kilometers long, although each participant can adapt the pace to their own needs.
Experiences in Middle-earth

In addition to the self-guided route, El Camino del Anillo also offers personalized plans on its website, with a shorter version of the route, workshops, children’s activities, and even group stays for schools or companies.
Those who do not want to travel to the Sierra Norte de Madrid can find another ideal option to immerse themselves in Middle-earth through music. The Candlelight: The Lord of the Rings concerts celebrate the 25th anniversary of the saga with songs from the films and an unforgettable experience.
