Brothers José and Joaquín Higueras started selling plants in Carabanchel, but have ended up with a large nursery in Yuncos (Toledo). Just 40 minutes from the capital, Vivero Higueras attracts locals from all over the region thanks to its more than 10,000 square meters dedicated to production and exhibition within a three-hectare estate that is constantly being expanded. Although its popularity is not only due to its size, but also to the variety and prices offered to those who travel the Community in search of green bargains.
The most economical part of the nursery is the seasonal plants produced there. Without intermediaries, you can find pansies, petunias, marigolds and geraniums for between 1 and 3 euros, with special promotions such as packs of ten pansies for only 9 €. In addition, cacti and pothos – big favorites among those looking to decorate the home – are available for just €1 and €3, respectively.
Higueras Nursery’s star plants

The star ornamental plant is the geranium, and this year more than 15,000 units were produced and marketed in spring. In the horticultural section, tomato plants lead with more than 22,000 specimens sold annually. In autumn, in addition, the sale of indoor plants and cacti that are more difficult to find, such as the monkey tail (Cleistocactus colademononis), spiral cactus(Cereus spiralis) or the San Pedro(Trichocereus macrogonus), as well as collector varieties such as Monstera variegada, Hoya kerrii (heart plant), Euphorbia Obesa and Senecio stapeliiformis, are also promoted.
The secret, explained the second generation of the family at the head of the nursery, is twofold: on the one hand, the ability to offer species that are difficult to find and, on the other hand, very competitive prices thanks to the lack of intermediaries. In Viveros Higueras they not only sell plants; they help to choose the perfect species and how to take care of it so that it prospers.
