The Leganés City Council has already awarded the contract for the Solagua sports complex, and work is scheduled to begin this summer, according to the council’s estimates. The project, which will provide Leganés with five new municipal swimming pools, has a budget of 10.6 million euros, one of the largest investments made by the city council of this Madrid municipality in recent years.
The plot where the new sports complex will be located sits atop the ruins of the old Solagua swimming pool, which closed in 2009 and was demolished years later. In this regard, the first deputy mayor and councilor for Public Works, Carlos Delgado, has stated that the project for the new sports complex will restore and expand “the essence of that legendary summer swimming pool.”
For now, Leganés residents will have to wait to enjoy the facilities. Construction is expected to take two years, so the Solagua Sports Complex is not expected to open until 2028.
In total, the complex will cover 38,000 square meters, but this is only the first phase of the project. The Leganés City Council plans to expand the sports complex with additional facilities in the future, since, once construction on this first phase is complete, another 50,000 square meters of land will be available for new buildings or sports facilities.
The Solagua Sports Complex facilities: up to five swimming pools
The new Solagua sports complex will feature three outdoor pools in its central area —one of them a wave pool and another for children—surrounded by a large sun deck. A parking lot for 145 vehicles will also be built, along with two buildings: one for hospitality services and another that will house two indoor pools, a gym, a spa, a jacuzzi, a Turkish bath, and other rooms dedicated to sports activities and services.
The construction of this new sports complex will make Leganés the second Spanish city to have a municipal wave pool; for now, the only municipality in Spain with a municipal pool of this kind is Torrejón de Ardoz.
