The Sorolla Museum reopens this Thursday, October 15, though only partially. After being closed for two years, the institution is unveiling a new exhibition space, but the historic house where the painter lived and its gardens will remain closed for years to come.
“It will be years,” admitted museum director Enrique Varela during the presentation. For now, there is no scheduled date for the full reopening of the historic mansion in Chamberí.
A former Volvo repair shop turned into a museum
The expansion adds more than 2 , 000 square meters in a former auto repair shop located next to the original building. The project involved an investment of 13.1 million euros and includes new exhibition halls, an 80-seat auditorium, a restoration workshop, and storage areas.
The space opens with the exhibition *Behind the Artist’s House: Architectures of the Sorolla Museum (1905–2026)*, which traces the history of the house through paintings, photographs, and documents.
