The Plaza de Chamberí, the epicenter of the Madrid neighborhood, begins this fall a profound transformation that will completely renew its appearance and functionality before the summer of 2026. The City Council has given the green light to the project, commissioned to the Department of Works and Equipment, with an investment of more than 2.3 million euros. The aim is to improve the quality and accessibility of the square, to create a “place for neighbors to stay and meet”, according to the City Council.
The project includes a total rearrangement of the interior spaces and the complete renovation of the pavement, with stone materials in gray tones that will provide modernity and visual continuity. The street furniture will be completely renovated, including three-meter wooden benches and modular benches to facilitate rest and meetings. The modernization extends to the lighting, which will adopt energy-saving LED technology to create a warmer and more efficient atmosphere, as well as the planting of 14 new trees and the expansion of landscaped areas with shrubs, reinforcing the vegetation cover.
A new fountain in the Plaza de Chamberí

One of the star elements of the remodeling is the new square, gray, unadorned fountain, composed of vertical jets and perimetered by granite that will function as a bench. The current fountain, more ornamental, with its iconic bronze children and the statue of the actress Loreto Prado will be preserved and relocated in planters next to the fountain, maintaining its heritage value. Another symbol of the space is the music pavilion, which will be moved to expand the central area and will be restored while respecting its historical character and uniqueness.
The children’s area will also undergo a major improvement, divided into three areas with different games to encourage the integration of different age groups.
