The works for the undergrounding of the A-5 will affect a 3.2 kilometer stretch between Aluche and Puerta del Ángel, causing major traffic cuts that will limit connections between the capital and towns in the western part of the municipality. The undergrounding will give continuity to the pedestrianized boulevard – known as Paseo Verde del Suroeste – which runs from Avenida de Portugal to Avenida del Padre Piquer.
The first phase of cuts will begin tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15, and will end in the summer of 2026. During this period , the capacity of the highway will be reduced to two lanes in each direction. This measure will be maintained every day except for two weeks of the year, from January 20 to 26 and from 27 to February 2, when there will be only one lane in each direction at night.
The Madrid City Council has published an alternative mobility plan for those who must cross the A-5 daily. The publication invites citizens to use public transport, avoid the area affected by the works and plan ahead to travel on new routes.
Alternative routes recommended by the consistory
For cars arriving from other municipalities to Madrid
Cars arriving to Madrid from other municipalities will be able to enter the capital thanks to the A5-R and its junction with the M-40, which allows reaching the M-30 north through the M-503, and the M-30 south through the A-42. The consistory recommends the use of the M-40 itself as the closest ring road to the city, and also encourages the use of any other road that avoids the underground area, such as the M-45, the M-50 or the R-5. For vehicles coming from the north of the M-30, it is recommended to use the A-6 to connect with the M-40.
For cars moving within the capital city
- Those drivers heading to the zoo area from the M-30 should take the detour along Paseo de Extremadura until the end of Avenida Portugal and continue along the Parque de Atracciones road.
- Drivers heading to the zoo area coming from the west of the A-5 should take the detour along Avenida de los Poblados until the end of Valmojado Street and continue along Yébenes Street. To access Avenida de los Poblados from the A-5, a detour must be made along Calle de Villadiego.
- Vehicles traveling between Avenida de Aviación and the area of Pirámides or Marqués de Vadillo can take General Ricardos, Eugenia de Montijo and Joaquín Turina streets.
- Vehicles traveling between Yébenes street and San Isidro bridge can take Duquesa de Parcent street, Nuestra Señora de Valvanera avenue, Vía Carpetana and Ermita del Santo promenade.
- The best alternative routes to circulate between Avenida de los Poblados and Segovia Bridge are Valmojado, Concejal Francisco José Jiménez Martín and Caramuel streets.
For public transport users
The consistory has assured that the service of the metro lines 5 and 10, the C-5 of Renfe suburban trains and the routes of buses 36, 39 and 65 will be reinforced. Besides, it will put into operation two bus shuttles without intermediate stops: SE1 (Aluche – Cuatro Vientos) and SE2 (Plaza Elíptica-Cuatro Vientos). The detours of public transport means due to the works will be published in the incidents web page of the Empresa Municipal de Transportes (EMT).
