Although no exact date has yet been announced, the Virtual Transport Card is a reality in the Community of Madrid. The digital transport pass is the culmination of the process of digitalization of the physical card that began several years ago. The Regional Transport Consortium has confirmed that, before the end of 2025, users will be able to access Metro, Cercanías and buses by bringing their smartphone close to the turnstiles, just as they did with the physical card.
The pilot phase, in which more than 8,000 people participated, made it possible to test the system and optimize its operation before its general implementation. The new tool, available on the MiTarjetaTransporte mobile application, allows you to digitize your Personal Public Transport Card (except for the Children’s, Blue and Annual Cards) and use it via NFC technology on your Android phone, recharging tickets and validating access directly at the turnstiles, just as with the physical card.
How to have the Transport Card on your cell phone

To use the pass on the mobile will require an Android 9.0 or later device with NFC technology and Google Wallet. The physical card will be deactivated when activating the digital version for security reasons. The process includes recharging and validation directly from the mobile, eliminating the need to go to physical points or carry an additional card.
The new system will also allow the loading of tourist tickets, 10-trip tickets and the airport supplement, and is expected to be extended to iOS devices in the near future. This development represents a significant improvement in the travelers’ experience, facilitating access, recharging of tickets and secure management of the season ticket throughout the region. Virtualization reinforces Madrid’s commitment to innovation and efficient mobility.
