We’re now heading into the second (and much-loved) long weekend of the month, which means it’s time to look for things to do in Madrid this weekend. And there are plenty. But in addition to exhibitions and events like tasting the Corona de la Almudena, the live music scene isn’t far behind. Specifically, a tribute concert for those feeling nostalgic: the Movida Madrileña, whose name many believe originated at a concert in the ’80s at the Escuela de Caminos.
It will take place this Sunday at the centrally located Círculo de Bellas Artes. A tribute with limited seating where a string quartet will perform these anthems right in the heart of Madrid.
Furthermore, since this is one of the concerts scheduled for this Candlelight season, the performance will maintain its famous aesthetic. In other words, thousands of candles will illuminate the venue during the concert.

"No controles," "Devuélveme a mi chica," and other anthems will ring out once again in Madrid

Many believe the term “Movida Madrileña” was coined on February 9, 1980, at the Escuela de Caminos during a tribute concert for Canito (a member of Tos). Bands of the time, such as Nacha Pop, Alaska y los Pegamoides, and Mermelada, performed there, and the entire event was broadcast on a delayed basis by TVE. The result? More people were able to put faces and music to what would soon become the soundtrack of an entire generation.
Songs that this concert now brings together in a comprehensive program:
- Devuélveme a mi chica – Hombres G
- Hoy no me Puedo Levantar – Mecano
- Snap! And I’m right by your side – Alex and Christina
- Chica de ayer – Nacha Pop
- No Controles – Ole Ole
- Eloise – Tino Casal
- Lonely Cadillac – Loquillo
- Escuela de Calor – Radio Futura
- The Werewolf in Paris – La Unión
- Salta!!! – Tequila
- Dancing – Alaska y Los Pegamoides
- It Was All the Cha-Cha-Cha’s Fault – Gabinete Caligari
- Sabor de amor – Danza Invisible
- Aquí No Hay Playa – The Refrescos
- A Quién le Importa – Alaska y Dinarama
