There are just two weeks left until students in Madrid return to the classroom, and for those who still haven’t come to terms with the end of summer, that means the countdown to the next long weekend is getting closer and closer.
Classes will begin on different days for the various educational levels. Students in the second cycle of Early Childhood Education, Elementary School, and Special Education will start next Monday, September 7, while those in Secondary Education (ESO), High School (Bachillerato), Vocational Training, music conservatories, and Official Language Schools will begin on Tuesday, September 8. Furthermore, at higher arts education institutions, classes will begin on Wednesday, September 9. At adult education centers, classes will not begin until Monday, September 21.
Regardless of the educational level, however, the first public holiday at schools in the Community of Madrid will be, as usual, on October 12. This year it falls on a Monday, which means there will be a three-day long weekend starting on Saturday, October 10.
Long weekends and official breaks for the 2026–2027 school year in Madrid
A few weeks after the October 12 long weekend will come the All Saints’ Day long weekend. Since November 1 falls on a Sunday, the holiday will be moved to Monday, November 2, resulting in another three-day long weekend for students in the Community of Madrid. The December long weekend will be even longer: Monday, December 7, will be a non-school day, while Tuesday, December 8, will be a holiday in observance of the Immaculate Conception (a four-day long weekend in total, including the weekend).
The Christmas break will begin shortly thereafter, on Wednesday, December 23. Although it will officially last until Wednesday, January 6, 2027, in practice , classes will not resume until Monday, January 11, since January 7 and 8 will also be non-school days.
In February, there will be two non-school days right after Carnival, specifically the 12th and 15th (Friday and Monday, respectively), resulting in a four-day long weekend, including the weekend of February 13 and 14.
In March, the Easter break will officially run from Saturday, March 20, to Sunday, March 28, although both Friday, March 19, and Monday, March 29, will be non-school days. Thus, the break between the second and third quarters will last 11 days in total.
When will the school year end?
Easter will be the last break for students (not counting local holidays in each municipality) until the end of the school year, which will arrive on Friday, June 18, for most educational levels. Summer vacation will begin on July 1.
Meanwhile, the Official Language Schools will remain open until June 25, while preschools for children ages 0 to 3, daycare centers, and the first cycle of preschool will remain open until July 30.
