A couple of months ago, National Heritage inaugurated the new season of the monumental fountains in the gardens of the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso, in Segovia. With daytime shows through the end of June and evening events throughout the summer, water is once again bringing this historic site to life: here’s how.

An original 18th-century hydraulic system
When the jets reach a height of 50 meters, only a few of the spectators are aware of what lies behind this spectacle. Built by order of Philip V in the 18th century, with French inspiration, the monumental fountains of the Royal Palace of La Granja continue to function today just as they did on the first day. Without water pumps or motors, the system is powered by gravity: the water flows down from El Mar, a pond located at the highest point of the gardens that collects meltwater and rainwater from the Montes de Valsaín. Traveling through 14 km of original cast-iron pipes, the water is propelled out by lead sculptures, all of which are based on classical mythology and painted to resemble bronze and marble.

Daytime and evening shows (and the occasional new feature)
For this season, which will run regularly through the end of June, with additional dates in July and August, National Heritage has planned approximately 50 shows, always subject to available water resources. As is customary, the program is divided into two main sections:
- Daytime shows: different groups of fountains are featured in the morning (12:00 p.m.) or afternoon (5:30 p.m.).
- Evening shows: centered on the monumental Baños de Diana fountain. They take place on Saturdays in July and August at 10:00 p.m.

To protect the facilities and optimize water use, the fountains do not all operate at the same time; instead, they are divided into different groups that alternate weekly. However, there are three dates when they will be turned on simultaneously: May 30, July 25, and August 25.
This year’s big new attraction has a name of its own: the Fuente de la Cascada Nueva. Following a comprehensive restoration to repair its marble, sculptures, and plumbing, this fountain is expected to rejoin the circuit starting in July, though this has not yet been confirmed.
