There is one day a year when the stifling heat of Madrid’s asphalt yields to the power of cool water and the neighborhood’s imagination. The Vallekas neighborhood once again claims its right to dream by transforming itself into a real seaport, thanks to the Vallekas Maritime Brotherhood, which is already putting the finishing touches on preparations for the 2026 edition of the Naval Battle, in which pirates, ship’s boys, and locals take to the streets to celebrate their big day.
This coming Sunday, July 19, 2026, the district’s streets will host what is now the 44th edition of the Naval Battle. The main event will begin at 4:30 p.m. on the Peña Gorbea Street Boulevard. From there, the festive crowd will spread out throughout the afternoon, concluding at 7:30 p.m. on Payaso Fofó Street, thus completing a route where fun and peaceful protest go hand in hand.
The origins of this unique celebration date back to 1982. The organizers explain that the festival is built on a “three-masted ship”: the massive participation of the neighborhood, the utopian dream of asking for the impossible, and social activism.
This year, the kickoff will be led by the Early Childhood Education Labor Platform (PLEI), which will be in charge of reading the opening proclamation.
Schedule and Timetable for the Procession
Although water takes center stage on Sunday, the Naval Battle shares its dates, self-organized origins, and spirit with the Karmela Festival, which celebrates its 22nd anniversary from July 16 to 19.
To make sure you don’t miss a thing from the Maritime Brotherhood’s official schedule, here are the key times for this year’s event:
- Friday, July 17, 8:00 p.m. – Nautical decorations. The brass band will accompany residents starting at 24 Payaso Fofó Street to decorate the balconies and streets along the parade route.
- Sunday, July 19, 12:30 p.m. – The Pirate Ship’s Descent. A parade set to the rhythm of batucada that will wind its way from Payaso Fofó Street to Plaza Vieja.
- Sunday, July 19, 1:30 p.m. – Community Paella. Plaza de Puerto Rubio will be the setting for a meal for 600 people aimed at fostering a sense of community. It is essential to purchase a 10-euro ticket in advance (includes bread and a drink), and 130 vegan portions will be available.
- Sunday, July 19, 4:30 p.m. – Opening Address and Naval Battle. The opening address will be delivered on the Boulevard (Peña Gorbea Street). Immediately afterward, brass bands, floats, and sailors will begin their water-themed parade, ending on Payaso Fofó Street at 7:30 p.m.
Rules of conduct for a smooth voyage
To ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible, the organizers emphasize a series of recommendations. Attendees are expressly asked to avoid using water balloons, as throwing them with force or from a great height can injure the person on the receiving end. Glass is also not permitted within the battle grounds.
On a practical level, the organizers recommend using the traditional “flu-flu”—a device that produces no waste, doesn’t break, and lasts all day. Finally, they offer some wise neighborhood advice for the fray: water from the puddles is much better on the ground than in your eyes.
