Among the major supermarket chains that are often found in every municipality of the Community of Madrid, one store is beginning to make a name for itself—a store that, although not new, had barely expanded until now.
Hiper Usera is a family-owned food retail company based in Madrid that was founded in 1985, when it opened its first supermarket at 63 Dolores Barranco Street in the Usera district. Four decades later, the chain has grown from that first neighborhood store to become one of the regional brands with the strongest presence in the region. Its growth has included joining the IFA Group, expanding into Guadalajara and Toledo, and developing various business formats, such as conventional supermarkets, Cash Mayoristas, the Aqualuna perfume store, and TuCash. The most recent figures show that its network comprises 58 locations and a workforce of nearly 2,400 employees.
Part of its success in the face of giants like Mercadona and Dia can be attributed to a combination of proximity and a wide range of products, in addition to its wholesale format, which appeals to both professionals in the hospitality and retail sectors and families looking to make large purchases and save money through bulk buying.
Its strategy does not consist solely of replicating the dominant discount or private-label supermarket model. The chain is committed to a hybrid approach: everyday and neighborhood shopping in its supermarkets, and a large-format selection for those who need to stock a large household or a business. That flexibility, along with its deep local roots and gradual expansion, has allowed Hiper Usera to establish itself as one of Madrid’s most recognizable competitors in an increasingly contested market.
Another Hiper Usera opening

As of this Wednesday, the supermarket chain has added a new large-format store. Hiper Usera, a Madrid-based chain part of Grupo IFA, is opening a Cash Hiper Usera store in Arganda del Rey, geared toward shoppers looking for bulk purchases, professional-sized products, and wholesale-channel prices. The opening is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, at 23B Avenida del Cañal.
The new store is located next to the A-3 highway, a strategic location for serving Arganda del Rey, other municipalities in the southeastern part of the region, and workers or customers who regularly commute between Madrid and the Valencia corridor. With this opening, Hiper Usera now has 14 cash-and-carry stores—operating without intermediaries—within its retail network.
Groceries, fresh produce, and cleaning supplies
The new store in Arganda will offer a wide selectionof groceries, household goods, refrigerated items, beverages, and frozen foods. The model aims to bring together in a single location products for everyday consumption as well as items suitable for businesses, restaurants, and retailers that need to restock regularly.
Fresh foods will play a significant role. The store will feature a butcher shop, deli, produce section, fish market, and bakery—sections that expand the offering beyond packaged goods and allow customers to do a complete grocery shop. For residents of Arganda and nearby towns, this provides a new alternative to local supermarkets, especially for weekend shopping or when large quantities of food and drink are needed.
