Metro de Madrid is joining European Mobility Week with a measure aimed at those who combine biking with public transit. Passengers who bring their own bikes onto the network will be able to ride for free on September 18, 19, and 20 —an initiative designed to promote sustainable travel and facilitate intermodal travel in the Community of Madrid.
Free travel will be available throughout the entire Metro network on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. To take advantage of this offer, you must be traveling with a bicycle: this is not a free Metro day for all users, but rather a specific promotion for cyclists who want to use the subway as part of their journey.
An initiative for European Mobility Week
The initiative is part of the European Mobility Week program, which takes place from September 16 to 22 under the slogan “Mobility for All.” During this time, European institutions and cities are promoting alternatives to private vehicles through activities and initiatives focused on public transit, walking, cycling, and accessibility.
For those who regularly get around on two wheels, the measure can serve as an opportunity to try new combinations: cycling to a station, taking the Metro with your bike, getting off in another part of the city, and continuing your journey. It can also be an interesting option for urban cycling routes or for connecting neighborhoods and municipalities without relying entirely on a car.
Although the free ride offer covers access for users with bicycles, it is important to remember that the conditions for bringing bicycles onto the premises and moving them around may vary depending on the station, the line, the time of day, and passenger volume. In the event of overcrowding, Metro staff may regulate access to ensure safety on platforms, in hallways, on stairs, and on trains.
