The Instagram account Estoy en la basura is proof that there are still spaces on the internet where it is possible to build a neighborhood and a community around shared values such as, for example, recycling. Now that initiative is becoming even more tangible with the launch of its first free flea market, where absolutely every item on display will be available for €0. And to attend, all you have to do is get a ticket in advance (also free).
To ensure the safety of the event, which will take place this Sunday, May 17, and to manage capacity at the venue—El Girasol de Puerta del Ángel (Calle de Caramuel, 68)—this advance ticket system has been established, with tickets available on Saturday, May 16, via Eventbrite.
The link to the tickets will be posted that same day in the Instagram Stories of the Estoy en la basura account.
Take a look first, and if you like what you see, reserve your ticket
To avoid making a trip for nothing and to ensure you come with realistic expectations, a video showcasing all the items available at this free flea market will be uploaded to the account on Saturday . That way, you can decide in advance if anything interests you or not.
Among these items, the result of a collection process that has lasted months—including donations and people moving out—there will be kitchenware, clothing, small furniture, home decor, and more, organized by category.
To ensure everyone has equal opportunities, when you present your ticket, you’ll be given “tokens” to exchange for items, and when you find something you like, simply hand over one token to get that item. You’ll need to bring your own bag, and if you’d like to grab a drink or snack at the market, bring some cash as well.
Beyond recycling, the event is designed as “a gathering where we can get to know each other, chat, build a sense of community, and discover one another among the neighborhood’s residents,” they explain. In fact, neighborhood residents are invited to participate, as future editions will take place in other areas of Madrid.
