The A-1 highway, one of the main access and exit routes to and from Madrid, will face major traffic restrictions as from June 26 and for approximately six months, especially in the section between El Molar and Pedrezuela. These restrictions are due to the refurbishment and adaptation works that the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility will carry out to improve safety and mobility, including the construction of a central boulevard, a bicycle lane and the reorganization of accesses between kilometers 40.800 and 45.500.
During the first phase of the works, there will be road closures in the Madrid direction, specifically between kilometers 44.100 and 45.500. To minimize the impact, detours and alternative routes will be provided, duly signposted. Thus, the roadway in the Burgos direction will remain in service, but one of its lanes will be enabled for traffic in the Madrid direction, while the other will maintain the usual circulation towards Burgos. Drivers who need to access Pedrezuela from Burgos will be able to do it through the local road M-627.
In addition to the total and partial cuts, “slight affectations” are expected, according to the information provided by the Ministry, to traffic from the beginning of the works, especially during the construction of traffic circles at kilometer points 44.200, 45.000 and 45.440, the execution of sidewalks and bike lane of 4.6 km and the demolition of old structures. The Ministry recommends drivers to plan their journeys in advance, as traffic jams and delays are expected, especially during rush hours.
Key dates and affected sections:
- Start of cuts: Thursday, June 26, 2025, from 08:00 h.
- Expected duration: until the end of December 2025 (six months).
- Main section affected: between kilometers 40.800 and 45.500 of the A-1, at El Molar and Pedrezuela.
- Detours: enabled and signposted, especially for access to Pedrezuela via the M-627.
