Legend has it that the inhabitants of the world of the dead leave the Mictlan to be reunited with their living relatives every November 1st. To celebrate such an important date, House of Mexico Foundation (Alberto Aguilera, 20) has filled its new splendid altar with flowers, photographs, candles, papel picado and skulls, which can be visited from October 2 through November 10.
Another year, the Mexican embassy turns a corner of Madrid into a cheerful and colorful cult of death, in the purest Aztec style. This time, the design of the altar has been the work of a Mexican art director: Eugenio Caballero, internationally recognized for his work on such famous films as El laberinto del fauno or Roma.
Caballero has focused on the journey of the dead into the world of the living (and vice versa). To differentiate from those of previous years, the scenographic spaces of 2024 will include experiences to stimulate the senses: aromas and sounds will transport visitors on a journey through limbo.
One of the most striking elements of the altar is the centerpiece. It is the work of Javier Martínez Pedro: one of the most important figures of illustration on lover paper, a material of artisan manufacture typical of Mexico.
