Metro line 6, the most used of the entire network -in the first six months of the year it recorded more than 90 million trips, according to data from the Community of Madrid-, will install automatic doors on all its platforms as part of its automation process.
This will involve the intervention of 70 platforms, where these doors will separate the passenger waiting area from the circulation area of the -also new- automatic trains of the line, “guaranteeing the entrance to the vehicle without any risk and in an orderly manner”, according to Metro de Madrid.
Another advantage of its installation will be the increase in the regularity of the service, putting into circulation a train every two minutes, according to the underground company. To this project the Community of Madrid will allocate more than 100 million euros.
What will the automatic doors on line 6 be like?
The new automatic doors, which will be arranged along 6.4 kilometers, will have sliding leaves and will be transparent “in order to have visibility at all times and offer a greater sense of spaciousness”. This technology is already used in other subways around the world, such as Tokyo and London -and, much closer, in some stations such as Provença in Barcelona-.
According to Somos Madrid, which has had access to the supply contract, there will be a color code to indicate the status of the doors: green for open, blue for idle and red to inform users that they should not try to access the carriages.
The same media reports that the designs approved by the Community of Madrid for the access doors include a screen in the upper area of “minimalist aesthetics with futuristic lines” with information about the station where the travelers are. You could also place “commercial or institutional messages”.
When will they be installed?
As for the deadlines for this project to be carried out, Metro de Madrid expects the awarding of the work to take place during the last quarter of this year.
Regarding the start of the works, it is scheduled for June 2025 “together with the comprehensive renovation of the track that will allow automating the circulation of trains“. And by the end of 2026 most of the doors should already be installed and ready for use.
