The Madrid metro system, with its 100 years of history, has managed to position itself as the fourth best in Europe, only behind Oslo, Sofia and Athens, according to the Bounce report in its index of the best European subways. This recognition is based on a series of factors that highlight the quality, efficiency and popularity of the Madrid metro.
With 242 stations spread throughout the city and its surroundings, the Madrid Metro is one of the most extensive in Europe. This network is only surpassed in number of stations by the London Underground, which has 272 stops, but Madrid’s has a significant advantage: a better distribution of stops per inhabitant.
In addition, its total length reaches 304 kilometers, a figure that highlights its capacity to cover large urban and metropolitan areas, facilitating the mobility of millions of people every year. It also makes it the most extensive network in the top four.
Why does Madrid have a good position?
One of the main reasons Madrid’s Metro holds this position is its overall index score of 6.74. Although this rating places it behind the metros of Oslo (with a score of 8.06), Sofia (7.64) and Athens (7.29), the Madrid system excels in other aspects.
It is, for example, the metro system with the highest annual passenger volume of any major European system, with more than 350 million users.
What parameters have been taken into account?
The Bounce report considered multiple criteria to construct this index. To assess the quality of each system, user reviews on Google were analyzed, especially the proportion of stations with ratings of 4 or more stars, as well as those with ratings below two stars.
In addition, the analysis was complemented by a study of online opinions, using tools such as BuzzSumo to measure the tone of articles and comments written in networks and media about each system. This “digital reputation” analysis made it possible to incorporate both user satisfaction and perception of service quality.
