Bicimad will be free several days a year. This has been one of the announcements regarding the public bicycle service in Madrid that the mayor of the city, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has announced today.
It was this morning, during the presentation of the plans for the expansion of the service, when it was announced that the public bicycles will be added “to the free days activated by the Madrid City Council for the Madrid buses“, said the consistory.
These days occur mainly for two reasons: when high levels of traffic and high pollution scenarios are expected. They usually coincide with important dates in the calendar such as back to school, Black Friday, after the Christmas vacations and after Easter.
On the other hand, the free travel will take place under the same conditions in which it has been applied until now: it will be valid for all trips up to 30 minutes long.
The expansion of Bicimad
The fact that Bicimad will be free on certain days of the year was not the only novelty communicated by the mayor of the city. Thus, accompanied by the delegate of Urbanism, Environment and Mobility, Borja Carabante, and the mayor of Pozuelo de Alarcón, Paloma Tejero, Almeida has made public that the service will also reach this Madrid municipality.
Last year the service was expanded to 19 stations in six districts and the fleet of bicycles was renewed. The balance of the year, according to data from the City Council, is that the number of trips on board the public bicycles in 2024 exceeded 9.94 million trips: 30.6% more than the previous year.
