The Community of Madrid has published a report explaining the rules to follow when traveling on urban or intercity buses that connect with the municipality (those of the Municipal Transport Company are excluded). These rules are made so that all passengers can access the vehicle safely and comfortably. The document focuses on the conditions and precautions to be taken into account by passengers carrying large or heavy objects.
Objects to avoid on bus journeys
According to the report, bus drivers shall have the right to prohibit passengers with objects that, due to dirt or any other reason, may disturb or endanger other passengers from entering the vehicle. Some examples are:
- Suitcases or packages with mud, spilled liquids or remains of garbage.
- Objects that give off strong or unpleasant odors.
- Materials that may stain, such as open paints, chemical products or dirty tools.
- Bulky objects that impede passage or block exits, such as large furniture.
- Bicycles, electric scooters or similar items that are not permitted or are not properly packed.
Objects allowed under conditions

The objects that can be carried during the trip are bags, briefcases or backpacks with a maximum size of 50x30x10 centimeters; shopping carts and wheeled backpacks; suitcases that do not exceed 55x40x20 centimeters; children’s scooters, ride-ons and children’s bicycles without pedals; musical instruments (with a case) and sports equipment (properly stored).
However, if the bus is about to reach its full capacity, the driver may prohibit the entry to the vehicle with any of the objects mentioned in the previous paragraph.
