A disclaimer before getting into the subject: no, it is not that from one day to the next Sol station (or any other in the network) is going to be called something else -although some have experience in changing nomenclature-. This is a service offered by the suburban store so that anyone can give their name to Metro de Madrid’s iconic rhombus.
This symbol -which was designed, by the way, by Antonio Palacios- is part of the subway’s official merchandising and is sold as a customizable decorative object. It is “made of an aluminum sandwich, measuring 41.5 x 25 cm”, according to the product description.
The Metro rhombus is customizable with names of up to 6 characters, which has provoked several reactions among users: “Perfect: Carmen, 6 characters”, commented in an Instagram post @carmenbucuria, while @gonzalo_sd_ wrote “My name is Gonzalo”, followed by an emoji of a sad face.
On the other hand, there is only one model available: the classic white, blue and red one. That is to say: it is not possible to order other variants such as the Chueca one, which sports the colors of the rainbow flag of the LGTBIQ+ collective.
How much does it cost to customize the Metro diamond?
Normally customizing these lozenges costs 34.95 €, but now that the store is on sale -between July 1 and August 31, 2025- they can be purchased for 31.46 € through Metro’s official website.
The delivery time from the moment the order is placed is about 10 days and no returns are allowed, unless there are typographical errors attributable to Metro de Madrid or the product has been damaged during shipment.
Furthermore, the company warns that it reserves the right “not to place orders that include swear words or words that may be offensive“.
The success of Metro de Madrid merchandising
Metro de Madrid is used to its products being well received by the public. An example of this occurred in October 2024, when on the occasion of its 105th anniversary they launched “smart” sneakers designed by Tito Customs which, despite their price (94.95€), sold out in just a few hours.
The subways of Madrid and Quito

As if looking for the differences between twins, many kilometers away from the capital -more than 8,000- you have to pay attention to the details of the Quito subway to not confuse it with the one in Madrid. The resemblance between one and the other is obvious and the names of the stations seem to be -following the analogy of the beginning- that freckle, mole, tattoo or scar that allow to distinguish one from the other.
It is not surprising considering that Acciona, the company in charge of the design of the Quito subway, has been responsible for promoting and managing the expansion of the Madrid metro. You can read more about this topic here.
