From August 4 to 16, 2026, downtown Madrid will host its three most iconic festivals: the San Cayetano, San Lorenzo, and Virgen de la Paloma festivals. Fourteen days of live music, processions, workshops, lemonade, and chotis dancing will take place in the squares and streets of neighborhoods such as Lavapiés, La Latina, and Las Vistillas. All events will feature a sign language interpreter.
Before the official kickoff, on Sunday, July 26, the 44th San Lorenzo Trophy Fun Run will take place (Calle de Argumosa, 3; from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.), organized by the La Corrala Neighborhood Association and the Argumosa Recreational Association, followed by the final event of the “Destino San Cayetano 2026” micro-concert series (11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.), organized by the Central District itself.
San Cayetano Festival (August 4–7)
El Rastro and Lavapiés kick off the festival season with San Cayetano, whose 2026 opening address will be delivered by SAMUR-Civil Protection. The main venues will be Plaza del General Vara de Rey and Calle de Ribera de Curtidores, 2.
Tuesday, August 4
The afternoon begins with the Giants and Bigheads Exhibition in Plaza del General Vara de Rey at 7:30 p.m. At 7:45 p.m., the Traditional Characters—Casta, Susana, Maja de Lavapiés, La Señá Rita, El Julián, and Don Hilarión—will be introduced, with on-site registration available until 7:15 p.m. The official opening speech will take place at 8:00 p.m., followed by the selection of the Traditional Characters at 8:45 p.m.
As for music, Raya Real will perform at 9:30 p.m. in Plaza del General Vara de Rey, while The Zona Rock Band will perform in Ribera de Curtidores at the same time. Both stages will feature DJ sets from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
The La Corrala Neighborhood Association is organizing the “History of Lavapiés” project in Cascorro Square (7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.), and residents of Calle del Oso will offer free lemonade accompanied by a brass band from 7:00 p.m. until midnight.
Wednesday, August 5
At 6:30 p.m., the Los Chisperos de Arganzuel Traditionalists’ Association will lead a public chotis masterclass on Calle del Oso. At 8:00 p.m., Amanda Verdú will offer a traditional performance in General Vara de Rey Square. The evening’s headline concerts will feature Jarana (General Vara de Rey Square, 9:30 p.m.) and La Fiesta (Ribera de Curtidores, 9:30 p.m.), with DJ sets continuing until 1:00 a.m. on both stages.
Thursday, August 6
The highlight of San Cayetano: Soleá Morente will perform at 9:30 p.m. in Plaza del General Vara de Rey, preceded at 8:00 p.m. by the traditional performance by Corrala de Zarzuela. In Ribera de Curtidores, Rata By Vibra Mahou will perform at the same time. The Tuna de Medicina from the Autonomous University of Madrid will entertain the crowd on Calle del Oso from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
During the morning, the Lavapiés District 12 Merchants’ Association is organizing a musical instrument workshop at 18 Calle de la Encomienda (12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.). The La Corrala Neighborhood Association is hosting a family-friendly “encierro” (bull run ) in Plaza de Cascorro (7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.).
Friday, August 7
Day of religious events: Holy Mass at the Church of San Millán and San Cayetano (15 Embajadores Street) at 7:00 p.m., followed by the procession of San Cayetano at 8:00 p.m. from the same church.
On the musical front, the duo Montoya & Carmona “La Juerga Flamenca” will perform at 9:30 p.m. in Plaza del General Vara de Rey. At the same time, in Ribera de Curtidores, the winner of the Destino San Cayetano 2026 contest will take the stage. The DJ sets will continue until 2:00 a.m. In the morning, the AVV La Corrala neighborhood association is organizing a neighborhood snack with a traditional brass band in Plaza de Cascorro (1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.).
San Lorenzo Festival (August 8–11)
The heart of these festivities beats in Plaza de Arturo Barea, in Lavapiés, where open-air dances, the patron saint’s procession, and numerous neighborhood activities will take place.
Saturday, August 8
The afternoon begins with a water fight organized by the Lavapiés Popular Festivals Platform in Plaza de Arturo Barea (6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.). At 8:00 p.m., the family-friendly show *Qué emoción*. The headline concert will be performed by the La Penúltima Sabinera Tribute Band at 9:00 p.m., followed by a DJ set by Paulo until 2:00 a.m.
Sunday, August 9
The traditional “Zarzuela de Mujeres” performance kicks off the evening at 8:00 p.m. in Plaza de Arturo Barea, followed by Los Vinagres By Vibra Mahou at 9:30 p.m. From 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the Esta es una Plaza Association will host the 9th edition of “Bolardo voy, bolardo vengo,” an artistic installation featuring bollards on Amparo Street, Sombrerete Street, and Caravaca Street.
Monday, August 10
Main Day of San Lorenzo: Holy Mass at the Church of San Lorenzo (Calle del Dr. Piga, 2) at 7:00 p.m. and a procession at 8:00 p.m. starting from the church.
In the evening, Metroolé will perform at 9:30 p.m. in Arturo Barea Square. Also at 9:30 p.m., the community lemonade party will begin at 7 Olivar Street, organized by the Agrupación Castiza El Orgullo de Madrid, the Agrupación de Madrileños y Amigos Los Castizos, and the Municipal Council of the Centro District.
Tuesday, August 11
Lotus will close the San Lorenzo festivities with a stellar concert at 9:30 p.m. in Plaza de Arturo Barea, preceded at 8:00 p.m. by Manuel de Segura with Copla Castiza. From 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., the Virgen de la Paloma Parish is organizing the 7th Virgen de la Paloma Chotis Contest in the Plaza de la Virgen de la Paloma.
The “Esta es una Plaza” Association is hosting traditional games, comic book readings, and arts and crafts from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Calle del Doctor Fourquet, 24. The petanque tournament requires prior registration at estaesunaplaza@gmail.com.
Virgen de la Paloma Festival (August 13–16)
The major festivals of the Central District bring the August festival season to a close. The Vistillas Gardens and Plaza de la Paja will serve as the two main venues, along with the streets of La Latina and La Paloma, where merchants’ associations will present their own parallel program.
Thursday, August 13
At 12:00 a.m., Manuel de Segura will sing the “Salve” to the Virgin of La Paloma in Plaza de la Paja. In the morning, the AEHLPA is organizing the Gran Chocolatada Castiza de La Paloma on Calatrava Street (from No. 3 to No. 10) from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and at 12:00 p.m., the sack race begins on Mediodía Chica Street.
In the afternoon, Plaza de la Paja will host children’s workshops on fan painting and puppetry (7:00 p.m.) and a chotis dance contest for up to 10 couples (7:30 p.m.; registration half an hour beforehand). At 8:00 p.m., Mari Pepa de Chamberí will perform at Las Vistillas and El Orgullo de Madrid will perform at Plaza de la Paja. The evening’s headline concerts feature Celtas Cortos at 9:30 p.m. in the Jardines de las Vistillas and the Tucán Orchestra at 9:00 p.m. in Plaza de la Paja.
From August 13 to 16, the AEHLPA will also host a barrel organ exhibition at 3 Calatrava Street (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM), and the performance *El mariachi le canta a la Virgen* at Calle del Humilladero, 28 (10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.). The Parchís and checkers tournaments in Cava Baja (7:00 p.m. to midnight) will take place on those same four days, organized by the Cava Baja Business Association
Friday, August 14
A new Salve will be performed at 12:00 a.m. in Plaza de la Paja, this time led by Elena Rodríguez Vidal. At noon, ADELA is organizing the 4th Edition of the International Traditional Mus Championship in Cava Baja and Plaza del Humilladero (12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.); registration, which must be done in person and in complete pairs, takes place at 12:00 p.m. at the entrance to Casa Lucio (Cava Baja, 35).
The evening concerts bring a touch of nostalgia: “Back to the ’80s” —featuring Los Refrescos, Modestia Aparte, and Fernandisco—at 9:00 p.m. in Las Vistillas, and “Back to the ’90s” with Eva Martí at 9:30 p.m. in Plaza de la Paja. DJ sets will continue on both stages until 2:00 a.m.
Saturday, August 15
The main day of La Paloma features the most solemn religious ceremonies: a floral offering at the façade of the La Salle-La Paloma School (Calle de la Paloma, 19–21) at 12:45 p.m., Solemn Mass at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of the Virgin of La Paloma, followed by the descent of the Virgin’s portrait carried by a detachment of the Madrid City Council Fire Department at 2:15 p.m. The procession departs from the church itself at 7:30 p. m.
In the morning, Plaza de la Paja will host a traditional interlude (12:00 p.m.), a fan contest (1:00 p.m.), and a Manila shawl contest (1:30–2:00 p.m.). The headline concert of the evening features Depol at 9:30 p.m. in the Jardines de las Vistillas, preceded at 8:00 p.m. by Olga María Ramos. The Plaza de la Paja will host the Fiesta Roneo Brunch (9:30 p.m.), with DJ sets until 2:00 a.m.
Sunday, August 16
Miss Caffeina will close out the August festivals with a stellar concert at 9:30 p.m. in the Jardines de las Vistillas. In Plaza de la Paja, Karavana will perform at the same time. Earlier, at 7:30 p.m., there will be a traditional joint performance by the Agrupación Castiza El Orgullo de Madrid and the Agrupación de Madrileños y Amigos Los Castizos.
The closing day includes a traditional vermouth at 12:00 p.m., a children’s “Drinking from a Botijo” contest at 1:00 p.m., an adults’ “Drinking from a Porrón” contest at 7:00 p.m., and an awards ceremony at 8:45 p.m., all taking place in Plaza de la Paja. The AEHLPA is also organizing the First Traditional Water Festival on Calatrava Street (5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.) and a lemonade giveaway (7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.).
