Madrid’s quintessential flea market is El Rastro: a Sunday event that attracts both visitors and locals every weekend to its thousands of stalls. However, its popularity is a double-edged sword that often results in large crowds. Nevertheless, other lesser-known markets, such as the Vía Lusitana Market in Carabanchel, offer a day out with fewer crowds but a wide variety of stalls.
It is a municipal market—owned by the Madrid City Council—that is set up every Thursday on Vía Lusitana Street in the district, along which its 150 stalls are spread out. That number, by the way, makes it the fourth-largest in the entire capital and one of the most popular among locals.
It is open only in the morning, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is easily accessible by public transportation: the nearest metro stations are Abrantes (Line 11), Plaza Elíptica (Lines 6 and 11), and Opañel (Line 6).
