September doesn’t have to mean getting back into the routine. Especially not in Madrid, where there’s always a new event to check out. And every now and then, one of those events comes along that turns an ordinary afternoon into a special memory. That’s what the Water Lantern Festival promises .
For two nights, on September 18 and 19, the capital will be transformed into a“little Thailand”: more than 1,000 floating lanterns will light up the North Pond in Juan Carlos I Park as night falls. And the chosen setting couldn’t be more fitting. This lake, located in Madrid’s third-largest park, will host one of the most spectacular events of late summer.
The concept is simple yet impressive, inspired by Thai celebrations such as Loy Krathong, in which small luminous offerings are placed on the water. In Thailand, these celebrations are part of the country’s own cultural and religious calendar; in Madrid, the Water Lantern Festival will recreate this scene through a fleeting experience in which attendees can express their wishes, fears, and dreams on the lake by personalizing their own floating lanterns.

An illuminated lake in Juan Carlos I Park
For a fleeting event like this, the choice of venue matters just as much as the event itself. Juan Carlos I Park fits the concept perfectly, inviting couples, friends, and families to enjoy a moment of outdoor leisure, complete with live music and food.
Covering 160 hectares, this park is one of Madrid’s largest green spaces, featuring vast meadows, paths, bodies of water, sculptures, and a historic olive grove. The event will take place next to the North Pond, where the water will take center stage. The floating lanterns will create a sea of lights on the lake, with the vegetation and the night sky serving as a backdrop.
The event, which has already captivated more than half a million visitors in over 50 cities worldwide, will open its doors in Madrid around 6:00 p.m. However, the highlight will take place between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. with the simultaneous release of the lanterns.
