The month of March 2025 will go down in the history of meteorology in the Community of Madrid as the rainiest March since records have been kept: 1893. But this is not the only data that the rains of these days will leave for posterity. The Madrid-Retiro observatory, according to data from Embalses.net, has exceeded 200 l/m², a historic rainfall record in the city: nothing like this has been seen in the 130 years that records have been kept.
To find the closest numbers to these we have to go back almost 30 years in time, to November 1997, when 198.4 l/m² were recorded. In addition, we must take into account that there are still 10 days left to close the month, so we will not know the real magnitude and scope of this historical rainfall record until the end of March.
As a consequence of these copious and incessant rains, they have been -are- days of looking a lot at a Manzanares to which we normally pay almost no attention: the “river apprentice stream” of which Quevedo spoke has surprised even the ducks themselves -joked a user in networks- with a flow that according to data from the Hydrographic Confederation of the Tagus has multiplied by 15, reaching even risk of overflow and causing cuts in sections of road.
Service information related to the rains
As we have been reporting since early this morning, the heavy rains and the risk of flooding have led to take measures this Friday, March 21, such as the total suspension of academic activity in universities. Citizens have also been asked to exercise extreme caution in the affected areas and to avoid any unnecessary travel.
The Ministry of Labor and Social Economy recalled the convenience of prioritizing teleworking in cases where it is possible and the right of workers not to go to their jobs if adverse weather conditions may pose a risk to their safety.
It is advisable to be promptly informed of the weather and traffic situation through official channels, such as Aemet, DGT or Emergencias Madrid.
