This Monday, work began on the installation of a large dragon-themed playground in the Plaza de las Tizas, in Usera. In its mission to consolidate this district as Madrid’s ‘Chinatown’ -given that it is the neighborhood of the city with the largest number of neighbors of this nationality- the Madrid consistory has decided that this mythological animal will shape the park as a nod to its culture.
This new public play area is suitable for children of all ages and has a capacity for 110 people. Behind its design, the Madrid City Council explains, there is “a multidisciplinary team specialized in the design and execution of exclusive and iconic leisure spaces” so that no child is left without enjoying it.
As we said, the installation of this dragon began on December 1 and it is estimated that over the next week and a half or two weeks the modules that make up the figure will be assembled and anchored to the ground.
These modules are two: ‘Dragon’s Head’ (with dimensions of 14.02 x 19.7 meters) and ‘Dragon’s Tail’ (2.98 x 3.29 meters).

Pedestrian itinerary between Madrid Río and Usera
This new park in the district is part of another project: the pedestrian itinerary that will connect the Plaza del Hidrógeno with Madrid Río -inspired in a project of Carmena’s mandate-, which is being executed by the Area of Works and Equipment and will be finished this December.
This itinerary will have an extension of 1.7 kilometers and will affect more than 63,000 square meters. In addition, along the route will be installed “elements that reinforce the identity of the environment as a space of coexistence with Chinese culture, something that will be reflected in the incorporation of specific furniture and references in pavements and signs”.
