The presence of supermarkets in places where they were previously unimaginable (the Mercadona in Malasaña) is changing the configuration of the city. The Madrid Metro already has its first supermarket. Carrefour has opened a Carrefour City in Plaza Elíptica station, becoming the first store of its kind in the capital’s subway network.
With 183 square meters of floor space, the establishment has a range of fresh produce, ready-to-go food and more than 2,500 references. It is, in essence, express shopping taken to the extreme: you enter the subway, take what you need and continue your journey.
Plaza Elíptica, where this new store is located, is a hub of Madrid’s transport system. Not only do lines 6 and 11 pass through it, but it also houses a bus interchange that moves some 8 million travelers a year.
Jesús Bermejo de la Insua, Carrefour’s franchise director, has pointed out that this opening reinforces the company’s commitment to innovation and customer proximity. It also opens the door to a possible expansion of the model in other Metro stations in Madrid and other cities.
This is not the first time that Carrefour has tested this concept in the capital: last year it opened two City stores in Puerta del Sol and Montera Street. Now, with this new subway format, it is taking another step forward in its commitment to immediacy.
The supermarket will be open every day, including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, from 7:00 to 21:00.
