After the one experienced between late June and early July, since last Sunday Spain faces its second heat wave of this summer 2025, as reported through a special warning by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). The phenomenon affects the country in general (except for the Cantabrian area and the Canary Islands) and in the case of the Community of Madrid the most affected areas can reach 40ºC.
This is the case of the metropolitan area and Henares, where the maximum temperature forecast for Tuesday is 39 º C and is not ruled out that in the Henares corridor will reach the aforementioned 40 degrees.
The arrival of the night does not seem to bring thermal relief either: “it is not expected that [temperatures] will drop below 23-25 ºC in areas of the center and south of the peninsula,” experts say.

Thermal inequality: tell me where you live and I’ll tell you how hot it will get

The reality is that depending on where you live you will feel the effects of the heat more or less. In other words: it is not the same to spend the heat wave in one district or neighborhood than in another, as this article by Jacobo García in El País attests.
The effects are more noticeable in poor neighborhoods such as San Cristóbal, where barely half of the homes have air conditioning or are less densely wooded than in other areas of the capital. The result? “The temperature is three degrees higher than in the center of the capital,” writes the journalist.
However, in other districts with large green lungs, parks close their doors when the heat arrives. At the time of writing, the City Council has announced that some areas of the Retiro and eight other parks will remain marked out.
Health tips for the heat

This page of the Community of Madrid shares measures to reduce health risks from high temperatures, such as staying hydrated or cooling off. And do the same for animals.
These health risks can range from dermatitis, burns, sunstroke or cramps, to syncope, exhaustion or heat stroke, which can have serious or even fatal consequences.
The Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) has recorded a total of 1,180 deaths due to heat waves in the period between May 16 and July 13, 2025 in our country since the activation of the heat plan.
