On May 2, 1808, Andrés Torrejón and Simón Hernández, then mayors of Móstoles, signed the Bando de la Independencia in favor of the uprising against the French. It happened on the same day that the people of Madrid took to the streets to confront Napoleon’s feared army and, against all odds, won the battle against the emperor years later.
The War of Independence, by highlighting the bravery of the ordinary Madrileño, has been painted by Francisco de Goya and used for documentaries and films. Today it is also the scenario on which the dramatized routes of Móstoles are based, shows organized by the Department of Culture, Development and Tourism Promotion that keep this historical period in everyone’s memory.
The Móstoles School of Volunteer Actors will be in charge of interpreting the events that took place in the municipality on May 2. The tour will start at the Tourist Office (Plaza del Pradillo) and will continue through the streets of downtown. Some of the places it will pass through are the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Santos, the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the Andrés Torrejón House Museum.
There will be two passes to attend the route: one at 11:00 and the other at 12:00. Tickets are required, but the good news is that they can be purchased free of charge at the City Museum or by e-mail.
