Madrid’s Plaza de Callao, one of the most legendary spots in the capital’s downtown area, will be transformed into a free summer movie theater for just one day: this is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Callao Cinemas, which opened in 1926.
The date chosen to transform this iconic location in the capital into a true open-air summer movie theater with seats is next Wednesday, July 22, at 9:30 p.m.: the screening will begin at that time, but “doors open” at 9:00 p.m.
The cinema has explained the initiative as follows: “It stems from a simple idea: after 100 years of receiving Madrid’s affection, the time has come to return the favor. We’ll provide the venue, the movie, and the popcorn. You bring whoever you like.”
The film to be screened will be *Back to the Future*, one of cinema’s great classics, which will be shown on the cinemas’ main outdoor screen.
How can you go to the free summer movie theater in Plaza de Callao?

Admission to this free Callao summer movie theater is open to the public until capacity is reached —a capacity, by the way, of 164 people—and seats will be assigned strictly on a first-come, first-served basis until all available seats are filled.
In addition, moviegoers will find free popcorn and water waiting for them at each seat, “reviving the little rituals that make a
movie night.”
However, attendees may bring their own food and drinks, if they wish, to enjoy during the screening. Please note: alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
