In the hot summer nights you have to take advantage of how hard it is to rest to see a movie in the best summer cinemas in Madrid. The concept of be “al fresco” is elevated when you add a movie screen, the best company and some snacks. The offer of open-air cinemas grows one more year, being probably one of the most refreshing plans of the capital.
Now it’s time to turn off the cell phone and look up at the stars, the stars of the cinema, of course.
1. Matadero Summer Cinema
The billboard of CinePlaza, the summer cinema designed by Matadero, has a title: Superstars, under this umbrella, gathers projects that straddle the line between musical creation and cinema. This translates into a hybrid Program in which there will be three “cinema-concerts” of relevant groups of the Spanish scene, two films with live commentary and a selection of 11 titles with musical themes or directed by musicians. Some of the titles that will be screened are: Moonwalker or What a night that day!
Sessions take place Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from July 4 to July 28. Doors open at 9:30 p.m., but screenings will start at 10:15 p.m.

2. La Estival in Plaza de España
The summer cinema returns to the Plaza de España from July 13 to September 15. La Estival will have a large 120 m² screen for projections and a gastronomic anteroom with 15 stalls, 5 more than last year. As usual, the audio will be broadcast through wireless stereo headphones that will allow you to listen to the film in its original or dubbed version. In this way they want to guarantee to the spectators that the audio will not be interfered by the noise of the central square.
Doors open Monday through Friday at 5:00 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays at 12:00 noon.
As in previous years, there will be a wide range of premiere films, special screenings, monologues and live podcasts, among other activities that have yet to be finalized.

4. Summer cinema at the Filmoteca
After a seven-year hiatus, the Filmoteca’s summer cinema returned last year and repeats this summer with the same format, but with a different theme. Every day of the week (except Sundays and Mondays), Room 3 of the Doré Cinema -also known as Sala Berlanga- will offer the screening of a film to be listened to with headphones so as not to disturb the neighbors.
From the end of June until mid-September, the Filmoteca Española has programmed a series of
short cycles that, although different from each other, share the playful spirit that summer invites.
Four lines are the backbone of the program in Room 3 of the Doré: Mundos (im)posibles collects a series of essential titles of dystopian cinema (with titles such as Hijos de los hombres or Terminator 2: The final judgment). Psychological thrillers will be within the Troubled Waters cycle(Fire in the Body orAwakening in Hell are a small sample of this). In Wuxia they collect the key films of the Chinese fantasy and martial arts subgenre(Ashes of Time or The House of Flying Daggers, among others). Finally, there will be a filmed concert special ranging from The Last Waltz to Neil Young: Heart of Gold.
