Seeing an exhibition is an accessible plan that is never too much when the weekend arrives, and even more so with the wide cultural offer we boast (rightly so) in Madrid. The significant reduction of tickets to visit public museums and the increase of tourism in the capital have caused that, in certain time slots, there are queues of a block to enter the Prado and the Reina Sofia.
As every year, the Ministry of Culture has revealed which were the most visited museums in the city during 2024, and as expected, those that are committed to the democratization of knowledge -orthat have more hours offree access- have increased the number of visitors compared to 2023.
The three most visited
The Prado Museum has received 3,457,057 visitors: 177,285 more than in the historical count of a year ago. The Reina Sofia Museum has also registered growth: its number of visitors has increased by 9% (it has welcomed 1,537,105 users in its main building).
Although the third most visited museum in Madrid was the Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Europa Press agency stressed that the gallery registered 9% fewer visitors than in 2023, falling below the one million mark (951,821).
Other cultural institutions with good results
On the other hand, the National Archaeological Museum has seen an increase in visitors: 627,334 compared to 508,544 the previous year. The same happened, although to a lesser extent, to the Museo del Romanticismo, which received 80,487 more visitors (195,266).
Another success was CaixaForum, with 947,642 visitors. Thanks to its multidisciplinary programming, this cultural center covers all kinds of experiences: from educational workshops to poetry festivals. With this year’s figures, it has consolidated its position as a great alternative to traditional museums.
