La Laguna is one of the busiest streets in Carabanchel. However, its sidewalks are no more than three and a half meters wide. For this reason, the Madrid City Council has decided to transform this road; after years of complaints about the congestion of vehicles and walkers, it is finally going to be pedestrianized. Through this measure, with a budget of close to 1.2 million euros, it is intended to improve the experience of pedestrians, and of course, the conditions of traders who have businesses here.
what will the new La Laguna look like?
According to Madridiario, the street will have a single platform through which both pedestrians and vehicles will pass, as long as the latter are not for loading and unloading or emergency vehicles. In addition, the City Council will establish new Verde zones. Specifically, shrubs of different species and 39 trees that will serve to mitigate the effect of the summer heat. And that’s not all: rest zones will be installed, with benches and litter garbage cans, and new lighting with LED technology.

The initiative to remodel this roadway is in line with the Madrid 360º Sustainability Strategy the aim is to reduce traffic in the city by up to 10%, reduce CO2 emissions by 65% by 2030, meet the air quality standards required by La Unión, and also reduce accidents at the wheel.
The work to remodel La Laguna will last approximately one year, until the spring of 2025. Traffic will be cut off from the beginning of the event. The only vehicles that will be able to cross the road during the remodeling will be, on an occasional basis, loading and unloading vehicles.
