On July 1, 2025, a new Renfe Cercanías monthly season ticket system will come into force, with a flat rate of 20 euros that will allow any user unlimited access to the Cercanías network throughout Spain, regardless of the urban center to which he/she belongs.
This new model replaces the system of free passes that has been in force since 2022, implemented by the Government as part of the package of extraordinary measures to mitigate the effects of inflation. These passes, which required a minimum of 16 trips per quarter, will no longer be available as of June 30, 2025.
New types of Cercanías season tickets as of July 1
Renfe has structured the new season tickets into three main categories, all of which are linked to the personalized Renfe&Tú card, which will be required for use:
- General season ticket: €20 per month. It allows unlimited travel on any Cercanías hub in the country.
- Youth Pass: 10 euros per month for people between 15 and 26 years old.
- Children’s Pass: free for children under 15 years of age, with annual validity and also nominative.
In addition, discounts have been announced in the Conventional Media Distancia network:
- 40 % discount for the general public.
- 50 % for young people.
- Total free of charge for children under 15 years of age.
New model replaces free passes
Since September 2022, users of the Cercanías service in Spain have been able to access free quarterly passes, provided they make a minimum number of journeys. This system will cease to apply on June 30, 2025, coinciding with the entry into force of the new flat-rate season ticket model.
The new system will be financed by direct subsidies, which will be in force at least until December 31, 2025.
What is happening in Madrid and other communities?
Some autonomous communities, such as the Community of Madrid and Andalusia, have approved additional measures that complement those of the central government. Specifically, free passes will be maintained for those over 65 years of age (financed by the Community of Madrid).
Change of the extraordinary bonus in the Madrid transport pass
June 2025 will also mark the end of the 60% bonus on the price of the monthly transport pass of the Community of Madrid, which has been in force since September 2022. As of July, this bonus will become 40%, which will imply a generalized price increase, although it will still be lower than the ordinary fare.
