In the Islamic Madrid st. Isidore and St. Maria de la Cabeza went to Mass at the primitive church de San Andrés (Plaza de San Andrés, 1), where the patron saint of the capital was finally buried. This small parish is still in the same spot in La Latina a thousand years later, although with some image washing that has maintained it.
The last one has been carried out for two years and now serves to reopen its doors, after various restoration works on the facade and the presbytery. Although originally one of the oldest in the city, the church was actually completely rebuilt between the 80s and 90s of the last decade, because it was looted and burned in 1936, losing all the original works of art.
The wooden coffered ceiling that decorates the main nave, the marble of the pillars and lintels and the decoration of the main dome make it one of the most beautiful churches in Madrid and comparable (on a small scale) to the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
San Isidro Tour
In the church of San Andrés a chapel was dedicated to its most famous parishioner: Saint Isidore. But the journey through the life of the Mozarabic saint can be continued a few meters away at the San Isidro Museum inception, where the house of his patron Iván de Vargas was originally located, on which the palace of the Marquises of Paredes was later built. Popularly, it is known as the House of San Isidro because this is where the saint lived and died. Although it was one of the most important palaces in Madrid, it was demolished almost entirely in 1975, only the Pozo de los Milagros and the Renaissance cloister remain.
Visits to St. Andrew’s Church are free and summer hours are Monday through Sunday: 7:45 – 13:00 h / 18:00 – 20:00 h.
Access to the museum is also free and its hours from June 15 to September 15 are Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. 🕒 Time:.
Another hot spot in the patron saint’s footsteps is the hermitage of San Isidro, where the fountain to which the miracles are attributed is located the cemetery which also bears his name and is also one of the oldest and most artistic in the city.
