After the controversial Meninas, which recurrently occupy Madrid’s public space, it is not uncommon to see exhibitions in the main streets of the city salamanca neighborhood. This time there are 8 life-size sculptures in a bluish gray that occupy the street of Ortega y Gasset on the occasion of the Global Summit of Women 2024 a summit of women entrepreneurs to be held in Madrid from May 9 to 11.
The exhibition is promoted by Madrid Luxury District, a union of luxury stores including brands such as Celine or Loro Piana, and in which 6 of the total of 14 sculptures that make up the exhibition have been distributed inside. The author of these works is Aurora Cañero and she already had a lifeguard, her best known sculpture, guarding the intersection between Ortega y Gasset and Núñez de Balboa streets last year.
what do the sculptures represent?
A swimmer about to jump, a surfer on the way to the water, a photographer looking for the frame or a skater on the move, Aurora Cañero’s sculptures live the contrast of having a certain calmness in the action, of being realistic and at the same time looking like divine beings. The City Council defines them as “beings close to the stars, angels or Atlanteans” and together with the sculpture of Jaume Plensa that decorates the corner of the Plaza de Colón it seems that this privileged neighborhood closes a circle of art in the street, even if only until July 7.
