The variety of Christmas markets in Madrid is such that we can no longer only find the most traditional and traditional stalls at this time of the year. The culture of Christmas markets in central Europe has reached Madrid and this is seen, for example, in the case of the German market organized by the German Evangelical Church or the Swiss Christmas market held this weekend.
The Swiss Charity Christmas Bazaar, as it is called, is organized by the Association of Swiss Ladies in Madrid (ADAS). Its origins date back to the 1940s, when a group of women “from the incipient Swiss colony showed solidarity with the most disadvantaged of the post-war period by creating El Ropero, where they knitted and collected clothes to donate to people in need,” they explain.
This spirit of solidarity has been maintained over time and that is why this Christmas market has a charitable character: the funds raised will go to the associations with which they collaborate -you can consult them here- and to two soup kitchens in the Community of Madrid.
What will you find at the Swiss Christmas market?
At the Swiss Charity Christmas Bazaar there will be traditional handicraft products, a charity tombola, children’s workshops and, of course, Christmas decorations: especially their famous handmade advent wreaths and centerpieces. Their prices range from 12 € to 55 € and in this link you can take a look at them.
There will also be room for gastronomy and you can taste and buy typical Swiss sweets and other traditional products such as fondue, rösti (a potato-based dish), glühwein (mulled wine), raclette, chocolate, cheeses….
In addition, there will also be a second-hand ski and toy market, bar, barbecue and a paddle tennis tournament.
