There are many reasons to claim the amateur. Probably one of the people who has written the best about it is Stan Brakhage with his In Defense of Amateurism, which banishes the negative connotation that has been attached to the term and claims as valuable that approach to things because they are made, as the word itself indicates, from love. And although in his case he was talking about cinema, it can be applied to any other field, such as painting or even theater. Proof of this? The free Broadway musical that can be seen these days in Madrid.
Amorevo, an amateur theater group, is responsible for the fact that during several dates throughout this month it will be possible to see on stage in the capital a representation of The Prom. School Edition, with a script adapted by Félix Cabello, Naudín Morales, Sasha Kuzina, Bruno Díaz, Helena Pardo and Alberto Bravo.
The story revolves around a group of Broadway stars in low hours who want to clean up their image. To do so, they travel to a small town in Indiana to support an LGTBIQ+ teenager who wants to take her girlfriend to prom. It is a musical that celebrates diversity and acceptance regardless of gender, religion, race or sexual condition.
This musical proposal -which it’s fair to say we learned about thanks to a video by @putomadriz- premiered this past weekend and almost a thousand spectators have already passed through the Teatro del Colegio Salesianos San Miguel Arcángel (calle de Cabello Lapiedra, 4) to see it. It has a duration of 2 hours and 15 minutes, and is divided into two acts with intermission.
How to go to see this musical for free?
To attend as an audience, you just have to book a ticket through the Amorevo website, although you can also get them directly at the box office (as long as they have not been previously sold out online).
On the other hand, at the time of booking there is the possibility of selecting a seat for 5 € for the Gold Seats, so that you ensure a place in one of the best locations in the theater.
In the facilities there is also a bar if you want to accompany the show with a drink or popcorn and at the end of the show you can make a donation (voluntary) and get to know the actors and actresses of the cast.
