Transport will not be the only municipal service to be affected by the New Year’s Eve (December 31) and New Year’s Eve (January 1) celebrations: Madrid City Council’s garbage collection service will be suspended on both days -this Wednesday and Thursday- due to the holidays.
The cleaning work will not take long to resume: on the night of January 1st and 2nd the service will be resumed, reinforced, with the aim of “absorbing the volume of waste generated during the New Year’s celebrations”.
The end of one year and the beginning of the next is precisely a period in which the volume of waste grows considerably, especially in the cases of glass, paper, cardboard and packaging.
To facilitate the work of the cleaning teams, the City Council has also requested the cooperation of citizens so that neither neighbors nor merchants deposit waste or remove the buckets of the communities to the public road during these two days.
Special garbage collection service

This measure is part of the 2025-2026 Christmas garbage collection campaign of the capital’s consistory, which has been in full operation since the second week of December.
As part of this campaign, a reinforcement of the service is carried out, which grows by 7% compared to last year and increases the collections as follows:
- Glass: both in containers and in the commercial area increases by 30 %.
- Paper-cardboard: an increase of 25 % in the commercial case and 15 % in containers.
- Daily services: from 96 to 103.
During the big celebrations and events of the coming days -such as the chimes and the San Silvestre Vellecana-“special cleaning devices” will be deployed. As for the Three Kings parade, 162 human resources -between drivers and operators- and 67 mechanical means, including sweepers, sweepers and compactor trucks will be deployed along the route.
