Alcampo has launched an adjustment plan that will affect its stores. In total, the company will close 25 supermarkets in Spain and will lay off 710 employees, which represents 3% of its national workforce of more than 23,000 workers.
Stores affected in Madrid
The Community of Madrid is one of the most affected by the adjustment, with 37 stores involved in the process. However, most of them will experience staff cuts and not total closures. Hypermarkets in Alcorcón, La Vega (Alcobendas), Boadilla, Pozuelo and Majadahonda are among the centers that will suffer layoffs and could be affected by closures.
Reasons for the adjustment
Most of the closures will occur in stores that Alcampo acquired from DIA in 2023. Many do not fit well with its business model, are poorly located or are unprofitable. The company justifies the plan by the need to adapt to new consumer habits, which favor smaller and more convenient establishments.
Alcampo assures that the measure is difficult but necessary, and that it will continue to invest in the modernization and renovation of stores, as well as in the development of its online commerce and in formats more adapted to new consumer trends.
In addition, the company has just started negotiations with UGT and Comisiones Obreras to specify the scope and conditions of this adjustment in the Community of Madrid and the rest of the country.
