Every year, Newsweek surveys thousands of healthcare experts – physicians, managers and other healthcare professionals – online and studies hospital quality metrics to find the best hospitals in the world. The list of winners covers facilities in 30 countries, including Spain. Of the 2,400 public and private hospitals that are evaluated, only 250 make the list. Of all the Spanish cities, Madrid is the one that appears most often in the ranking.
The capital’s winners were La Paz, in 49th place; Doce de Octubre Hospital, in 52nd place, and Gregorio Marañón (76th). Outside the top 100, we find Hospital Ramón y Cajal (163rd), Hospital Clínico San Carlos (175th) and Fundación Jiménez Díaz (198th).
Of the six hospitals, three have improved their position with respect to last year: the Doce de Octubre has moved from 54th to 52nd place, the Fundación Jiménez Díaz has moved up five places (from 203rd to 198th) and the Clínico San Carlos has climbed no less than eight positions (from 183rd to 175th).
In addition to this world ranking, Newsweek compiles a list of the best-rated hospitals in each country. Here, Madrid has an even greater presence: the capital appears 14 times. The centers chosen this year are La Paz (1); 12 de Octubre (2); Gregorio Marañón (5); Ramón y Cajal (8); Clínico San Carlos (10); Fundación Jiménez Díaz (11); Puerta de Hierro (14); La Princesa (27); Infanta Leonor (35); Móstoles (59); Fundación Alcorcón (60); Rey Juan Carlos (61); Getafe (76) and Severo Ochoa (82).
