There are times when words are not enough, not even for great writers. That explains why Carmen Martín Gaite -Carmiña, for those closest to her- could barely use a sentence to talk about that “kind of tearing” with which we do everything in Madrid and, nevertheless, language was not enough to try to capture what she experienced during her trip to New York.
That is why his work Vision of New York is not a novel or a short story, but a compilation of more than 80 collages – dated between September 17, 1980 and January 24, 1981 – that speak, in a very personal way, of his daily life there through images, clippings and notes. And now they are also the subject of a free exhibition at the Casa del Lector in Matadero (Paseo de la Chopera, 14).
Carmen Martín Gaite and collage: a diary in freedom is organized by Casa del Lector, Fundación Carmen Martín Gaite and Ediciones Siruela on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the writer from Salamanca.
Visiting hours are from Tuesday to Friday from 4 pm to 8:30 pm and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 11 am to 2 pm and from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Parallel to the exhibition, other activities such as workshops, conferences and shows have been organized. The complete program can be consulted on the website of Casa del Lector.
More exhibitions where literature and art meet
Apart from this one, right now in Madrid there are other exhibitions where art and literature intertwine:
- Proust and the Arts. From March 4 to June 8, 2025 on the first floor of the Thyssen (Paseo del Prado, 8). We tell you how to visit it for free here.
- Madrid, Viva la Bohemia! The underworld of literary life. From February 27 to June 1, 2025 at the Museum of History of Madrid (Calle de Fuencarral, 78).
