The Mutiny of Arganda 2025 is a walk through the Spain of the Golden Age. This celebration recreates the time of Cervantes and the Duke of Lerma with a spectacular agenda of historical, cultural and festive activities. This year, from May 23 to 25, Arganda del Rey celebrates for the first time this event as a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, a recognition that underlines the importance of heritage and the collective effort of hundreds of neighbors who participate in the organization and representation of the events.
The Mutiny of Arganda recalls the rebellion of 1613, when the residents of the town, led by the mayor Felipe Sanz, confronted the Duke of Lerma, the favourite of Philip III, to defend the independence of their town against the debts and abuses of power. This episode, which was even attended by Miguel de Cervantes, has become the most important historical event of the town.
Programming and period atmosphere
Friday starts with the inauguration of the Golden Age Market and the Book Fair, theatrical performances, exhibitions of birds of prey, family workshops and the parade of the Duke’s guard. In the evening, the group Ñu will offer a free concert in the Plaza de la Constitución.
On Saturday, after a morning of chess, knightly combat and literary presentations, comes the main course: the triumphal entry of the Duke of Lerma accompanied by Cervantes, the theatrical representation of the Mutiny with more than 200 volunteers and a great fire show in the Plaza de la Amistad entre los Pueblos.
On Sunday, the baroque market, children’s workshops, simulated running of the bulls and musical and theatrical entertainment for all audiences will continue.
The streets and squares are decorated with period decorations and stalls of handicrafts, gastronomy and typical products. The locals dress up in historical costumes and actively participate in the performances and parades, making the visitor feel part of history. The atmosphere is completed with traditional dances, fire shows and live music, turning the town into an authentic Golden Age set.
