Businessmen, bullfighters, actors and even members of royalty know Camisería Burgos: a family business that puts quality above all else and boasts of being open for 120 years. Its first store opened in 1906, standing out for its artisanal approach and personalized service.
Upon the death of its founder, Julián P. Burgos, the store was left in charge of Santiago Olave, a cutter in the house and grandfather of the current owner: Carmen Álvarez, who proudly leads a third generation of tailors.
“There are shirts made by machine or by hand, at the customer’s request,” explained Álvarez in an interview for Telemadrid. Before tailoring, measurements are taken to create a pattern (there are more than 800 references) that is kept for future orders.
Customers can choose specific details such as the type of collar, cuffs, embroidery and fabrics. Each garment takes about a month to be finished, and costs around 200 euros, a high price but in line with the exclusivity of the product.
The shirts of celebrities
Iconic characters of the big screen such as Ava Gardner, Cary Grant or Orson Welles made a stop here during their stay in Madrid, back in the fifties. Today the store manufactures garments for the film industry: its shirts and pajamas reach Hollywood to appear in films by Woody Allen, Sharon Stone and Adrien Brody, among other producers. This has won over foreign fashion lovers, who make up 20% of his clientele.
It also has Spanish followers, including Miguel Bosé, already a regular at the house. Although perhaps, of all the people who have ordered clothes in this historic business, the best known –nationally –is King Felipe VI, who buys his elegant shirts with the initials F.B. here.
More places frequented by celebrities in Madrid
There is no celebrity who has passed through Madrid and doesn’t have a favorite restaurant, café or store in the capital. Julianne Moore has mentioned El Corte Inglés in more than three interviews, stating that it is “the best shopping center in the world”. Harry Styles, for the second year in a row, has been photographed in Acid Shop having a specialty coffee. We could go on with more, but in this article we have already revealed all the weaknesses of celebrities (and some politicians).
