The AEMET has issued heat advisories for thirteen autonomous communities, and in some areas of eight of them, the advisory has been raised to an orange level. In Madrid , maximum temperatures of 39°C are expected in parts of the metropolitan area, the Henares River basin , and the southern part of the region. The warning, which according to the AEMET indicates a “significant” level of danger, will remain in effect from 1:00 p.m. to 8:59 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18.
In the city of Madrid, temperatures are expected to reach 38°C; the rise will be somewhat more pronounced in Alcalá de Henares and Aranjuez, where temperatures are forecast to reach 39°C, as well as in most municipalities in the central and southern parts of the region. In the Sierra Norte, the heat will not be as intense, but a yellow alert is also in effect, and highs are expected to reach 35°C.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, Wednesday, the AEMET is maintaining the high-temperature warning between 1:00 p.m. and 8:59 p.m. across much of the Community of Madrid, although it will be downgraded to a yellow alert and lifted in the Sierra Norte. On August 19, highs of 36°C are expected in the metropolitan area, the Henares basin, and the southern part of the region. Temperatures will continue to drop throughout the week; for this Thursday, August 20, the AEMET has not issued any heat advisories for any part of the Community of Madrid.
It will be cooler this weekend
Although the heat shows no signs of letting up in Madrid for the time being, AEMET forecasts indicate that the rise in temperatures will reverse this weekend. The drop could reach ten degrees compared to the highs from earlier in the week, meaning that highs in the metropolitan area will range between 26 and 28°C.
In addition to some relief from the high temperatures, the AEMET forecast also calls for some thunderstorms and showers in the Sierra de Guadarrama area and the Henares River basin toward the end of the week.
